There were no new iPads in 2023, but it seems Apple is ready to make up for it this year. A recent report indicates that Apple has hinted at the unveiling of a new iPad, likely an iPad Pro, in less than five weeks. Here's what we know so far:
The clues come from the newly released iPhone software beta, iOS 17.4. According to insights from 9to5Mac, the software includes references to a new iPad model, one that hasn't been seen before.
This is evident from mentions of a landscape Face ID camera, positioned along the long side of the tablet. Historically, iPads since 2011 have featured a camera on the short edge, in portrait orientation, with the exception of the tenth-generation iPad, which lacked a camera entirely.
While one might speculate about the possibility of a new entry-level iPad, the presence of instructions on setting up Face ID suggests otherwise. Entry-level iPads and even the iPad Air rely on Touch ID, making it improbable for them to transition to the more advanced Face ID. Hence, all signs point towards a new iPad Pro.
This potential change is significant, especially with the iPad's increasing use in landscape orientation, particularly with accessories like the Magic Keyboard.
The iOS 17.4 code indicates that Face ID setup should be done in landscape mode, with the camera positioned at the top of the screen. Once set up, Face ID would function seamlessly in both portrait and landscape orientations.
Additionally, some changes in iOS 17.4 are tailored for users in the European Union, including the introduction of a new app marketplace and updates to the App Store. These adjustments are in compliance with the Digital Markets Act, which goes into effect on March 7.
Based on these developments, it's likely that the next iPad Pro will be unveiled in early March. While there's a chance of delays, this initial indication is promising for those anticipating something new and innovative from Apple.
